Accomplished financial services journalist Lachlan Maddock has been appointed editor of Investment Magazine effective October 13.
Maddock joined Conexus Financial in February as senior journalist on Investment Magazine. He was previously Editor of Investor Strategy News and before that cut his teeth as a journalist on financial industry publications IFA and Investor Daily.
He was also a mentee of the late, great journalist and publisher Greg Bright, who died last year and was honoured with a scholarship in his name by the Fund Executives Association Limited, which he helped to establish.
Conexus Financial editor-in-chief Aleks Vickovich said: “When Lachie joined Conexus I told him the brief would be ‘yarns Greg would have liked’, and over the proceeding months, he has not disappointed.”
Vickovich said Maddock had displayed his knowledge of, and passion for, institutional investment through his in-depth analysis of industry developments such as the TelstraSuper-Aware merger – which was confirmed to the market on Monday – and industry-wide failures in operational infrastructure and administration.
He has secured interviews with industry leaders – including the nation’s first with Mercer Super chief investment officer Graeme Miller – but has also been eager to showcase smaller and emerging asset owners, through profiles of the Cook Islands National Superannuation Fund and Aboriginal Investment NT.
“Lachie exemplifies our unique role in market as both an advocate for superannuation and fiduciary investing and occasional critic of it, making him uniquely well-placed to lead Investment Magazine in its 20th year and beyond,” he said. “He also has a sharp sense of social justice which enriches his editorial and aligns with Conexus Financial’s purpose-led ethos.”
Maddock said: ‘I’m excited to be taking on the role at a critical time for the superannuation system.
“Super never stays still, and as the industry grapples with complex issues around member services, investments and retirement, the Investment Magazine editorial team will continue to serve it with hard-hitting news and analysis – but will never shy away from calling out poor practice and bad behaviour wherever we see it.”
He takes the reins from Simon Hoyle, who will move into a senior writing role across Investment Magazine and Professional Planner while retaining his role as editor of Retirement Magazine, a print and digital publication launched last year dedicated to the decumulation phase of superannuation.
“We thank Simon for his custodianship of the publication, especially at a time when his decades of experience covering and advocating for the professionalisation of financial advice have been highly relevant for the institutional market,” said Vickovich. “We know that the financial advice profession will warmly welcome the return of his regular byline on Professional Planner – at yet another time of turmoil for the sector with the Shield and First Guardian scandal.”
The changes follow the appointment of journalist Darcy Song as Asia-Pacific correspondent, covering the region’s asset owners, including Australia’s market, from Singapore.
