Ian Chappell and Jane Turner, two of the patrons of the refugee aid agency Australia for UNHCR, have launched a Christmas ‘Star Appeal’ for families in need.

Chappell, the former Australian cricket captain, and Turner, the ‘Kath’ character in the television comedy ‘Kath & Kim’, said the appeal would raise money for “practical support” to improve the quality of life for refugees at Christmas. This included equipment for wells and the provision of clean drinking water, gardening tools, blankets and books and pencils for children. Turner said: “I really don’t need another latte pashmina when $33 could keep a refugee family warm.” Donations can range from $12, which can supply a child with books and pencils for a year, to $360, which can provide a village with clean drinking water. Australia for UNHCR is widely supported by the financial services industry. Appeal donations: www.unrefugees.org.au
