The AIST is holding its first superannuation fund governance conference at the Melbourne Sofitel Hotel on May 6, which is designed to help trustees and executives to review the governance of their funds.
Typically, most governance conferences to date – and sessions at the major industry association conferences – have involved funds looking to better govern their investments rather than the oversight of their own organisational structures. Next week’s conference, held in conjunction with the Melbourne Centre for Financial Studies, includes as speakers: Keith Ambachstsheer, of the University of Toronto (via satellite link), Ross Jones, deputy chair of APRA, Professor Michael Skully, of Monash University, and Leo de Bever, CIO of VFMC. Ian Patrick, chief investment officer of the $370 billion Australian Retirement Trust, says that integrated balance sheet management will “beyond a shadow of a doubt” become a more prominent feature in the superannuation industry as funds grapple with the compounding effects of their growing size, systemic importance and the liquidity needs of servicing a larger cohort of retirees.
