What began as an industry ‘bands night’ in 2002 has become an annual hedge fund awards and fundraising event for Cure Our Kids, a children’s cancer treatment research charity.

Adopting the theme, ‘It’s a Jungle Out There’, Hedge Funds Rock 2008 aims to counter attacks on the industry by promoting understanding of hedge funds and the importance of short-selling while providing entertainment from Dragon (whose set list includes ‘Speak No Evil’, ‘April Sun in Cuba’, and ‘Rain’) and a band comprised of ‘hedgies’, Typhoon. During the event, The Australian chapter of the Alternative Investment Management Association will announce the following annual awards: • Australian hedge fund of the year • best emerging manager • best long/short & absolute return fund • best market neutral fund • best global macro/futures fund • best investor supporting Australian manager • best fund-of-fund 2008 • contribution to the Australian hedge fund industry. The factor determining the winners is track record over 36 months, measured against Sortino Ratios, which gauge the risk-adjusted return of an investment asset and annualised returns for the last three years. In its sixth year, Hedge Funds Rock has raised more than $1.58 million for Cure Our Kids, which has used proceeds to invest in medical equipment, renovations to oncology wards and entertainment items for patients. The event will take place on the night of September 4 at The Ivy Room on George Street in Sydney. For more information, contact Katrina Ortolan from Cure Our Kids on (02) 9938 3499.
