The Australian Financial Complaints Authority has appointed Heron Loban to its independent board, effective from 1 January 2024.
A proud descendant of the Mabuyag and Boigu peoples, a lawyer and an academic, Loban is in-house counsel with Queensland South Native Title Services and a company director for Mura Lagh, a First Nations owned and led consulting firm.
She has recently served as the director of First Nations strategy at Queensland Performing Arts Centre and has held various academic positions including senior lecturer posts at Griffith University and James Cook University, and her PhD thesis was on “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and consumer law”.
She will replace Carmel Franklin, who became a member of the inaugural AFCA board in 2018, when the authority took over from the Financial Ombudsman Service.
