Bernstein has appointed James Crawford, formerly head of strategy and business development at IAG Asset Management, as senior portfolio manager.
Crawford, who was previously responsible for IAG’s strategic asset allocation and external manager portfolios, will join Bernstein’s Australian equities team reporting to Stuart Rae, Bernstein’s Australian chief investment officer. He will also work with US-based senior portfolio manager, Kevin Boreen, on the Global Value team. “This is a significant step forward for Bernstein in Australia. It demonstrates the commitment that Bernstein is making to our market and our growing Australian client base,” Rae said. Prior to IAG, Crawford spent seven years as consultant and principal at Towers Perrin and six years at Commonwealth Funds Management where he held several roles including economist, portfolio manager and head of research.
The role of IFM Investors in arranging a visit by a delegation of Australian super funds to the US last month gives a pointer to the scale of the longer-term ambitions of the global super-fund-owned asset manager, and a recent investment in the manager by the UK pension fund NEST is designed to give it even greater clout. IFM chair Cath Bowtell tells Investment Magazine the manager aims to be a partner to governments around the world as they seek capital to build critical infrastructure.
