Hobart adviser Kristian Falconer gave up art for finance but she still applies her eye for detail in creating plans for her clients.

As a student Kristian Falconer had set her sights on becoming an art gallery curator and had no intention of following her father into financial planning. But while helping to stage an undergraduate art exhibition as part of her Bachelor of Arts degree, Falconer realised becoming a curator would be a grueling career option and she had a rethink. Today, Falconer is a qualified financial planner and says while beautiful art works adorn her office, that part of her life has turned into a “passionate hobby” rather than a career. After completing her BA and doing the requisite traveling stint, Falconer joined her father’s financial planning firm, Hillross – Falconer Financial Services, initially as a PA. She spent the next five years studying towards her graduate diploma in financial planning, working her way up from PA to paraplanner, and eventually qualified financial adviser. “I spent that time getting to know the client base and learning the fundamentals of financial planning,” Falconer says. Falconer now has responsibility for the firm’s templating service. “We manage our portfolio’s through a template service within the PortfolioCare platform. Each template is based on the client risk profile and is invested on a tactical basis using research from Hillross and van Eyk.” She is also responsible for selecting the underlying funds managers used. “Funds are selected using only A and AA rated funds as researched by van Eyk. In the event of a downgrade or a change in asset allocation we are able to efficiently remove the fund manager or change the weighting in the portfolio at the click of a button.” She says the template service means clients’ portfolios can be reviewed on a monthly basis. Falconer says Hillross offers a broad range of strategic advice, but one thing she is passionate about is risk insurance, and making sure her clients are adequately prepared for life’s curve balls. She said the bulk of her clients are “empty nesters”. “Their kids have left home, or are at least semi self sufficient, they may have paid off their mortgage and are looking at opportunities to build wealth.” In September last year her father set up an office in Melbourne, leaving Falconer and one other planner in the Hobart office. She says having worked at the firm for the past eight years, and being a familiar face, has helped the Hobart-based clients cope with the changing of the guard. Falconer is also involved with the Hobart chapter of the Financial Planning Association, currently serving as treasurer, and has sat on the committee for the past two years.
