ING Australia has introduced a new asset class to its OneAnswer investment platform and added six new investment options to the mix.

ING announced yesterday it had included infrastructure on the platform for the first time with the addition of the RARE Infrastructure Value fund, managed by RARE co-founders Richard Elmslie and Nick Langley. The fund targets an absolute return of 5.5 per cent above the OECD G7 inflation rate.

The other new funds include: BT Core Australian Shares, Fidelity Australian Equities, Legg Mason Global Multi Sector Bond, T.Rowe Price Global Equity and Vanguard Index Diversified Bond.

Mark Pankhurst, head of product and marketing for wealth management at ING, said the new funds provide greater choice of managers and funds that are highly rated.

Privately funded infrastructure funds have increased in popularity worldwide, he added.

“Governments around the world have been supportive of the infrastructure sector through stimulus packages and have an incentive to support the sector,” Pankhurst said.

“It is a growth sector in terms of targeted expenditure, public and private, over the medium to long term. Infrastructure assets tend to have resilient earnings and can protect investment portfolios against further economic weakness.”

Pankhurst said the addition of index funds through the Vanguard Index Diversified Bond fund allows advisers to construct a purely passive diversified portfolio for their clients – the menu now has passive listed property trust, Australian equity, international equity and fixed interest funds – where they are seeking a low fee alternative.

The funds being added are highly rated by research houses, have performed strongly and are leading funds in their particularly sectors, he added.

“We also take a medium term outlook that is beyond the current market downturn and into the market recovery phase,” Pankhurst said.

“So we constantly think about what advisers and clients will be wanting in the near future.”

OneAnswer now has more than 78 investment funds from over 26 managers.
