The Future Fund has completed its investment operations senior management team with two hires – one of which marks the third recruit from custodian BNP Paribas Securities Services this year.
Ilana Ward, who was responsible for all Melbourne-based client relationships at BNP Paribas, is the third person to head to the Future Fund from the custodian this year. She will be relationship manager for the fund’s investment operations. The Future Fund’s head of investment operations Gordon McKellar joined in February also from BNP Paribas where he held the same position. And operations strategist Wendy Leong joined in March after three years as BNP Paribas’ custody consultant. To complete the investment operations team, Campbell McCulloch will fill the position of invesment operations manager. He previously worked for Vanguard Investments Australia where he more recently worked in investment solutions for Vanguard’s European and Asia Pacific clients. Leong and Ward also worked together prior to their time at BNP Paribas. Both were employees of Deloitte and Towers Perrin custody consulting. In a prepared statement, McKellar said he was pleased the operations leadership team was in place. “We’ll now start deepening the team with specialists in a number of areas including performance measurement and risk management,” he said.
Despite a prevailing belief to the contrary, super funds that have internalised investment management often terminate their own teams and strategies faster than they would an external manager, according to research house Chant West.
